ETL Mark for North America

Only testing companies accredited by Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are allowed to test and certify that products are safe for use in the U.S. The approved companies are appointed as Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories (NRTL). An NRTL's function is to provide an independent evaluation, testing and certification of any electrically operated or gas- and oil-fired product. OSHA’s accreditation of a NRTL is valid for five years.

All products used in the workplace are required to bear a certification mark. Each NRTL has a unique mark (e.g. ETL listed, CSA and UL marks) to show that the product has met the minimum requirements of nationally recognized product safety standards, such as those issued by ANSI, IEC, UL, CSA and CGA. In addition, the product manufacturer has agreed to periodic follow-up inspections to verify continued compliance.

ETL SEMKO’s trademarks are ETL (USA) and cETL (Canada). The ETL mark is highly recognised in North America and originates from the company “Electrical Testing Laboratories” (founded by Edison in 1896).

The testing partner is the only difference.
The regulatory foundation regarding certification from various NRTLs is identical. When a product bear ETL US-mark in the US, or an cETL-mark for Canada, its shows/proves exactly the same fulfilment of appropriate North American standard as the UL-mark or the CSA-mark.

The only real difference between the marks is in the service and capabilities of the testing laboratory that provides them. ETL SEMKO’s quick turnaround and flexibility brings your products to market more quickly, more smoothly, and more cost-effectively than ever before. Also, our staff is involved in several organizations and committees to keep you educated on the latest testing standards and practices.

ETL SEMKO continues to make significant investments in facilities and staff to meet your testing needs. We are dedicated to provide you with prompt, responsive, and cost-effective product safety testing and certification services. At ETL SEMKO you are able to test for North America and Canada at the same time you test for other markets which can help you save money, meet your deadlines and get your product to market quickly.

When your product has successfully completed ETL testing, it is listed in our Directory of Listed Products. This directory updated annually, currently lists over 20,000 ETL Listed products and can be accessed through our Product Directory.
